Online Cpt Codes
can anyone tell me what the job of a Medical Coder is.?
I am thinking of taking an online class but am not sure exactly what the class will entail besides learning cpt and Icd 9 Codes. Also how is the job market out there for this job. I got laid off and am having problems finding another job. I don’t want to waste money on this class if the job market is not good. PS I live in Washington state. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
You code medical charts based upon their level of complexity (meeting a criteria of elements); code for procedures performed, and diagnosis and modifiers. Many electronic records keeping systems automatically code these days; so there will be less & less reliance on actual human coders. The job will probably boil down to oversight of the EMR codes–so fewer coders will be needed. How long until all this occurs? Hard to say. But EMR is already here. FYI–getting a coding job can be very hard as most places want experience–which is a catch-22–can’t get it without a job.
