how long does it take to get a Medical Billing certification? how is this different than Medical Coding?
Most certificate/diploma programs are between 6-9 months, if you do it self paced (rather than at a school) it could be longer.
Coders read patient notes/documentation and code appropriate diagnosis and procedure codes for that patient visit.
Billers do the follow up for claims that are sent to insurance. They do what needs to be done to get a claim paid. They spend a lot of time on the phone with insurance companies and patients.
Many programs include both billing and coding, however, very rarely does one person do both (maybe in a very small clinic they might) most large clinics and hospitals prefer to have different people do the billing and coding, however, having a knowledge of both help both billers and coders.
