Look for Category III CPT Codes: Temporary codes
Developed by the AMA, CPT procedure code is a standard code applied to procedures and services for the purpose of patients’ medical records. CPT codes are of three types: Category I, II and III.
Category III Cpt Procedure Codes are the temporary codes for new and developing technologies. The concept behind this category of codes is to help the researchers track emerging or developing technology and services to justify and materialize the extensive usage and clinical efficiency. So if you are the one who gladly welcomes the new technology, then there’s quite a possibility that you are familiar with the Category III CPT Procedure codes.
This category of CPT codes is created to allow for data collection and utilization tracking for new procedures that fail to meet the criteria for Category I CPT codes. Category III CPT Procedure codes comprises five digits, starting with four digits followed by the letter ‘T’ in the last place. These codes are temporary and will be removed if the procedure or service does not get accepted as Category I Cpt Code within five years.
Things to keep in mind about Category III CPT Procedure codes:
It’s not right to use a Category I CPT code or an unlisted procedure if Category III CPT code exists
Look for a base code that’s quite similar to the Category III code
Find the fee schedule for the Category III CPT code using the same methodology as done for unlisted procedures
